One window
The three weeks that set the other forty-nine.
In the days after calving a cow faces the steepest energy demand of her whole year, just when she is least able to eat. The transition period runs three weeks either side of calving; the three weeks after she calves — when she is fresh — are where the gap opens. How well she comes through that fresh window goes on to shape her peak milk, her persistency, whether she gets back in calf, and how long she stays in the herd. Fix nothing else and that window still decides the year. It is the only thing we work on.

This didn’t come out of a lab and a pitch deck. It was invented and worked out over more than ten years on six commercial dairies across three US states, by the late Dr. David Barcik and a team he gathered around him. Every idea in it was tested on cows somebody had to milk the next morning, on farms where a wrong call costs real money. What came through that is what we brought to the UK — nothing more, and nothing dressed up.

A veterinarian, a research scientist, and the owners and herdsmen who ran the cows every day. Half the original team were doctors; all of them were dairy people. His son, R.T. Barcik, is now bringing it to UK farms — farmer to farmer, with the honesty and the numbers to back it.
